  • Collection of solar energy through panels that convert sunlight, through the photovoltaic effect, into direct electrical current.

  • Conversion to alternating current through groups of photovoltaic inverters from the energy generated in the panels.

  • Transport of alternating electric energy through an electricity grid distributed by the solar field that collects the energy from each group of inverters.

  • Coordination of the energy dispatches from the solar thermal and photovoltaic plants through a Control Centre.

  • Interconnection of the plant to Chile's electricity grid, through an elevator substation that increases the voltage to that of the interconnection point and a sectional substation that connects the plant's output with existing electricity lines.

  • The energy is captured through heliostats, mega-mirrors that follow the path of the sun with a movement in two axes.

  • The receiver is located at 220 meters high, reaching the tower a total height of 250 meters.

  • The thermal storage system consists of tanks for cold salts and hot salts. It is this system that allows electricity to be generated during the night.

Principales tipos de Concentración Solar

There are basically two types of concentrated solar power: solar radiation concentrated in a fluid along a line, or solar radiation concentrated at a single point.

Parabolic Troughs

Parabolic troughs concentrate solar radiation in a straight line. The fluid that will carry the energy that is captured in the parabolic troughs enters at one of the ends at a certain temperature and speed, and exits at the other end at a higher temperature.

Solar Power Tower

Solar radiation is concentrated at one point, at the receiver located on the upper part of the tower. The radiation is absorbed and heats a current of molten salts that are stored and then later extracted to transfer the heat to water and create steam.
